The ends of area rugs often receive the most foot traffic and wear and tear, especially with fringed edges. When the edges of your fine area rug are beyond normal repair, replacement of the worn ends or fringe is an option.
A. Binding: binding is normally the least expensive technique for completing the edge of a rug. Binding the edge of a rug involves wrapping a small strip of textured reinforced polyester around the edge and sewing it across the entire end. This is finished by a cover binding machine. The benefits of binding include a vast selection of colors, low cost, and an excellent upgrade to your fine area rug. With so many choices of binding colors, practically any shade of rug can be coordinated. By matching the binding to the shade of the rug, the edge of the rug does not emerge, and the binding mixes in with the rug. A different color could be chosen for contrast, yet by and large, the binding is so thin (around ¼ to ½ of fabric showing) and blends so well with the rug itself that the general visual impact is slight.
B. Serging: Serging uses a thick fiber that is wrapped around the edge of the cover. It is frequently considered a higher-end look and is usually observed on produced (pre-made) territory rugs. For worn and damaged rug ends, serging is the perfect solution to maintain the original look and quality of your fine area rug. Serging mimics the hand-sewn look. Although it is regularly done by machine, it produces a very original and hand-loomed appearance. As with binding, the choices of colors for serging are myriad and can accommodate any rug.
